INTERPRETING SERVICES

CONSECUTIVE

The client speaks and stops periodically while the interpreter articulates in the target language.  Typically, this method doubles presentation/meeting times because of the repetition.  Consecutive interpreting does not usually require the use of interpreting equipment, however, it is effective to have one microphone for the speaker and also another for the interpreter at larger sessions.  This format is normally used for small groups, telephone, medical consultations, court hearings and multiple meetings

SIMULTANEOUS

The speaker and the interpreter talk at the same time.  You can conduct your meeting without pausing, resulting in a more natural presentation.  Normally two or three interpreters work as a team and switch back and forth during the presentation.  This ensures consistent quality and accuracy.  This format is similar to what you might see at the UN, at international conferences and in some courts and is effective at convention keynotes, presentations, breakout sessions, seminars and global meetings or any meeting or function where participants from numerous countries attend and don’t want the session interrupted by interpretation.   Simultaneous interpreting requires equipment (a transmitter for the interpreter and headsets for the clients) and a booth at formal or large functions/meetings.

WHISPERING

This format is a less formal simultaneous interpreting format, using portable equipment, although it is sometimes accomplished without equipment.  It is very effective to use a portable system for a facility/plant tours in noisy environments so that the clients can hear the interpreters and the interpreters do not need to talk loudly.  Some industrial environments necessitate yelling,  which is hard on the interpreters voice.  Use of equipment also allows clients to look around and eliminates the need to congregate around the interpreter.
